HOLIDAY, Fla. - HOLIDAY, Fla. - Aggressive drivers on U.S. 19 will be the target of a safety campaign the Florida Department of Transportation will launch Wednesday.
A news conference to announce the crackdown will take place in the parking lot of the Tahitian Resort, on U.S. 19 a few miles south of State Road 54.
Oct. 10 was chosen to launch the three-month campaign since the date is national Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day, Marian M. Scorza, DOT District 7 spokeswoman, says in a news release.
On U.S. 19 from Pinellas County through Citrus County, there are, on average, 3,555 injury crashes per year, based on data from 2004 through 2006, according to DOT. One-third of the injury crashes were related to aggressive driving.
Safety messages will warn against speeding, aggressive driving, drunken driving and running red lights. In addition, the messages will urge motorists to wear seat belts and watch out for pedestrians.
Besides a media blitz to spread the message, many law enforcement agencies will intensify patrols along the highway.
