NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - County-western superstar Charlie Daniels visited West Pasco today to promote his benefit concert for the Angelus, the Hudson-area home for severely handicapped persons.
The Charlie-palooza Concert kicks off at noon Saturday, Dec. 1, at Ford Amphitheater, at the Florida State Fair Grounds, in Tampa, with a series of bands. The Charlie Daniels Band is scheduled to go on stage at 9:45 p.m.
Daniels visited fellow Angelus supporter Sheriff Bob White today and a big crowd of fans at the Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff presented a badge to Daniels to make the singer an honorary deputy.
Daniels sang "Amazing Grace" for the crowd. He spoke about his awe for the Angelus staff and their devotion to the handicapped residents. The weekend slate of events will conclude with a prayer service led by Daniels at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Angelus.
Daniels will lead a Friday golf tournament in Valrico as part of the benefit, followed by a dinner party Friday night at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
The jovial singer, songwriter and guitarist also spoke about accepting an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry. Daniels, 71, will be inducted into the Opry late this winter.
Today, Daniels mentioned a recent trip to Iraq to entertain troops. He was riding in a helicopter after the show when the copter had to dodge gun fire.
