Hard work by our legislators on taxes may have led us to nothing. I can't believe it.
So far, the criticisms of this provision seem to be that it is not a completely new tax law, but a revision to the old system. Many of these detractors are really concerned that we might make a cut in government spending.
It seems unlikely a new bill could be presented in 2008. So, it seems to me to be a "now or never" situation.
Since 1990, we have had a 201 percent increase in the value of our homes with related increases in taxes and insurance. I have discussed this with people who are leaving Florida because they cannot absorb the cost of taxes and insurance. It particularly involves people who are on fixed incomes.
I guess the days are gone when our local politicians will remark about how to spend the "windfall."
I am sure in the next few months we will see criticisms that will show disastrous effects, and that the current provision is legally insufficient.
Shouldn't our elected officials support the taxpayers and represent us on minimizing payments for unneeded programs and, wherever possible, eliminating government waste?
