NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - The river will twinkle with hundreds of lights this holiday season as the eighth annual Riverlights Boat Parade casts off this Saturday, Dec. 1.
Greater New Port Richey Main Street, which is presenting the parade, and the event's chairman Craig Carmichael of Suburban Feed and Pet Supplies, hope to make this year's colorful boat parade the best ever.
"We are so excited that Craig Carmichael stepped up to chair the parade," said Judy DeBella Thomas, the executive director of Greater New Port Richey Main Street. "He has some fantastic ideas to make it a great one.
"We want everyone to put this on their calendar as a wonderful and festive kick-off to the holiday season," Thomas added.
The parade, part of local Main Street Holidays festivities, will set sail down the Pithlachascotee River from Moonlight Bay, in Port Richey, at 6:30 p.m. This is an earlier start than last year to accommodate an increased number of parade entrants, according to Thomas.
SiTting along the banks of the Pithlachascotee river, spectators can gaze at the decorated watercraft as they glide by.
Visitors can also hop onboard with Miss Daisy Boat Tours, which will take spectators down the parade route for a nominal fee. The boat will launch from the Crab Shack restaurant in Port Richey on a voyage to Sims Park.
"Downtown DJs" will play holiday music in Sims Park from 6 to 9 p.m.
The parade boats will be judged as they cruise past the dock at the riverfront city park.
Judging will be based on theme, lighting, colors, and special effects, with two separate boat-length categories – up to 24 feet, and 25 feet and longer.
The first-place winners in each category will have the option of participating in the Downtown Holiday Parade hosted by the Holiday Rotary Club and the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce the following Saturday, Dec. 8.
Immediately following the evening boat parade, there will be a holiday performance by the Gotta Dance youth dance troupe at the Sims Park band shell.
The entire event is part of Main Street Holidays, which continues into the following weekend, Dec. 7 - 9.
There will be a parade captain's meeting today, Nov. 28, 7 p.m., at Juan's Black Bean Café, on Main Street in downtown New Port Richey.
Main Street Holidays recently won an Honor Award from Florida Main Street and the Florida Secretary of State as the Best Main Street Special Event of 2006.
