NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - CARES is bringing to West Pasco an innovative program that helps prevent early memory loss.
Community Aging and Retirement Services has been chosen as one of 11 organizations across the U.S. to establish the program, "Senior Moments," according to Caryl Melancon, CARES public relations coordinator.
Christine Powers will serve as director of the memory maintenance service.
Those with early memory loss can participate in fun and educational activities in a laid-back environment, Powers explained. The program will be open one day a week, beginning in January, Powers said.
Applications will be offered Dec. 1, she said.
The Brookdale Foundation Group of New York City created the model for Senior Moments.
"The Brookdale model utilizes professionals and trained volunteers to offer those with early memory loss opportunities to learn techniques and skills that enhance memory and increase well being and to enjoy camaraderie," Stephen L. Schwartz, president of the foundation, said in a press release.
CARES seemed the logical partner here because the nonprofit agency already provides many services to older adults in their homes or through senior centers, Schwartz noted.
"We are now recruiting volunteers who will help us make this a valuable program for those in need of this service and for their family members," Powers commented.
