PHCC Singers to Perform Madrigal Dinner

SEVEN SPRINGS, Fla. - SEVEN SPRINGS, Fla. - Just in time for the holidays, Pasco-Hernando Community College will present festive madrigal dinners for the public's amusement.

The entertainment and dining experience will take place Dec. 7 and 8, 6:30 p.m. both nights, in Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs, 4651 Little Road.

The PHCC Fine Arts Club and PHCC Chamber Singers, led by Carla Kranz, the artistic director and a PHCC humanities professor, will re-create a royal court in 16th century Renaissance England.

Madrigals are settings of secular texts for two or more voices. England was the home to many great madrigal composers, including William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and John Dowland.

Madrigal dinner guests can enjoy a traditional royal banquet and show, complete with king, queen, servants and court jester in ornate costumes performing skits, as well as dancing and singing period music, according to Kranz.

Each course of the dinner will be announced by a brass ensemble with a Wassail toast, a hot spiced apple drink, and Boar's Head fare followed by the English feast.

The menu will include roast pork and potatoes, a winter salad, maple syrup glazed carrots with a flaming plum pudding for dessert catered by Central Park Family Restaurant in New Port Richey.

Characters will mill around the tables using their early English dialogue, bawdy humor and songs to immerse the audience into the 16th century.

The two and a half hour long production and formal concert "is a really good way to start the holiday season," says Kranz.

Tickets, $19 each, may be purchased: at PHCC West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, in G-Building, Room 202, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily; the Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs office; or from members of the PHCC Fine Arts Club.
