NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Performing on stage with hundreds of eyes gazing upon them comes quite naturally, especially for this veteran television personality.
John Wilson is a well-known senior television news anchor with Fox 13 News, in Tampa. His wife, Mary K. Wilson, is a cathedral musician for the St. Peter Episcopal Cathedral Church in St. Petersburg.
For the past 30 years, the couple has combined their talents to sing on the Suncoast at various concert halls, parks, and community centers.
Their holiday performance "Sounds of Christmas" will be held at the Living Word Church, 5151 Rowan Road, on Nov. 25, 2: 30 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $5 and proceeds will benefit the Thursday Musicale scholarship fund, says Maryanne Freeman, vice president of Thursday Musicale.
Thursday Musicale is a 50-member female choir that performs at local venues and the Living Word Church.
The group's scholarship fund benefits Pasco County high school students to further their music education.
The Wilsons have sung with the Florida Orchestra, the Mostly Pops Orchestra, the Richey Community Orchestra, the Tampa Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Florida West Coast Symphony and at many benefit concerts.
"The last 30 some years have been incredible for me," says John. "I have a wonderful wife who I get to sing with in front of symphony orchestras from time to time."
The duo is especially popular among school children and teachers for their holiday concerts in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties for the past 17 years, which are sponsored by the Steinbrenner Family and the New York Yankees.
The couple met in Virginia where they both attended Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond.
John, who anchors the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts for WTVT Channel 13, has covered world events in Washington, Middle East, France and Haiti for the past 40 years, says Freeman.
He has won several awards for his commentaries and television news broadcasts.
"The Army put me on TV for the first time anchoring the news during the Vietnam War," John says of his career, "which sent me to the anchor chair at stations in Richmond, Norfolk, Charlotte and St. Louis."
Mary K. Wilson graduated with a music education degree and earned a master's degree from National-Louis University.
She has served as a cathedral musician for the Episcopal Cathedral Church for the past 19 years and has been performing church music for more than 40 years as well.
A lyric soprano, Mary K. has directed four choirs and served as the director for the music resource center for the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida. Her choirs have often performed in television specials and for special events around Tampa.
