Joan Atkins, who wrote in her Nov. 3 letter to the editor she recently returned from the United Kingdom, having found Britain "sinking" under the misrule of its "socialistic government," must have been sleepwalking.
I have visited Britain and Scandinavia during four of the past seven summers. Everywhere there I found prosperous, vibrant economies with populations generally better off and more secure than millions of Americans.
Their healthcare systems differ from country to country, but all provide high-quality, universal coverage for a fraction of the cost of our American health system. Aging friends who require extensive medical care praise the services they receive.
Younger people, from workers to business executives, shake their heads in dismay that a nation as rich as the U.S. leaves millions without medical care.
Incidentally, these "socialist" countries, from Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark to Britain, are home to some of the most dynamic international corporations in the world. Industry lives harmoniously with union labor and a high standard of living.
If this is "socialism," bring it on.
