NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Florida young people again are being asked to take the pledge – to recycle.

In recognition of America Recycles Day, tomorrow, Nov. 15, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, along with Recycle Florida Today and Creative Recycling Systems are partnering for the fourth annual Florida Schools Recycling Pledge Card Contest.

The contest rewards one class from an elementary, middle and high school that submits the most recycling pledge cards.

By completing recycling pledge cards, individuals promise to do more to protect the environment through recycling efforts and to help their class win a refurbished computer.

"Recycling helps reduce waste, which is vital to preserving Florida's natural resources and protecting our environment," said the DEP's director of waste management, Mary Jean Yon.

"This contest encourages Florida's youth to take personal responsibility to manage waste and demonstrate environmental stewardship at school and at home."

The class with the most number of pledges at its level will receive a gently used desktop computer including monitor courtesy of Creative Recycling Systems.

The winning class will also receive a pizza party courtesy of Recycle Florida Today.

In addition, each individual who fills out a pledge card will be entered into a statewide drawing for a $100 gift certificate donated by Recycle Florida Today.

Many West Pasco schools already hold recycling drives for old batteries, paper and other items.

In 2006, more than 8,300 elementary, middle and high school students and more than 12,000 Floridians took the pledge to recycle and buy more recycled products, according to DEP.

For more information on how to take the pledge, visit the DEP Web site.
