Tackle shop roundup

Denny B's Bait and Tackle, 813-885-9811: There have been some nice trout catches on the grass around Three Rooker Bar. Though undersized fish have been the rule, fish to 18 inches were reported, along with a couple of gators to 25 inches. Cotcha Trout Killers and Gulp Shrimp were working well. A regular at the shop reported taking a 38- and a 40-inch snook fishing lighted docks at night in the Anclote River. He was using Mirr-O-Lure plugs silver with black backs. Both fish were released unharmed.

Dunedin Bait and Tackle, 727-736-3474: Prior to the cold front, anglers were taking a few mackerel to 20 inches around the western end of the Dunedin Causeway drawbridge. Fish were taking live sardines and silver spoons well. A few reds have been taken at the bridge, as well, with live shrimp working well on fish to 21 inches.

Hart's One Stop, 727-938-5364: Good numbers of trout were caught on shrimp and jigs worked at Anclote Gulf Park pier. Fish to 22 inches were reported. There have been some fish taken at Key Vista Park, as well, with lots of shorts in the mix. There still are a few flounder reports coming in, with the Anclote River producing a few fish for anglers fishing shrimp on the bottom. Fish 14 to 15 inches were the norm, but a big fish of 22 inches was reported.

Pier 60, 727-462-6466: A few mackerel were being taken, though the action has slowed. Fish have been 16 to 18 inches and taking live shrimp and sardines under floats. A few sheepshead have been landed and there still are some keeper trout being taken, with the night bite better.

Redington Long Pier, 727-391-9398: The western end of the pier has been the place for those looking to score kings. Fish have been running 36 to 46 inches and those fishing outriggers and live bait have been doing best. The mackerel have been a good bet, with fish to 24 inches reported. Good numbers of reds remain around the pier pilings. Fish from undersized to 35 inches are being landed. Live sardines and shrimp have been best. Trout fishing has been good, with night fishing tops. Most have been taken on shrimp under floats, but live sardines have been working, too. Most fish have been between 12 and 17 inches. A couple of tarpon 100 to 120 pounds were hooked and broken off after short fights and a few snook are being hooked at night, with most undersized. There have been a few fish to about 30 inches. Live pinfish and small ladyfish have been good baits when fished along the shadow lines.
