Coast Guard Auxiliary Installs Leaders

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Division 11 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary recently conducted its Change of Watch banquet at the Spartan Manor.

Karen Miller, of Palm Harbor, and Greg Gamache, of Clearwater, were sworn in as division captain and vice captain, respectively.

District 7 Vice Commodore Don Frasch assisted in the ceremony.

Miller and Gamache then swore in the 2008 flotilla commanders and vice commanders, the division staff and the five flotilla staffs.

Miller stated in her opening remarks that Division 11, which covers the area from Clearwater to Hudson, has a new motto – "Be the Best, Then Get Better."

The Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation ribbon went to the team of Kevin McConn of New Port Richey, Don Hoge, of New Port Richey, Maxel Garrison, of Palm Harbor, and Jim Ryder, of Safety Harbor.

They had won the International Search and Rescue competition in Toronto, Canada, in November. This was the first time in the 7-year history of the competition that a United States team had won first place.

Honored guests from the U.S. Coast Guard at the ceremony and dinner were:

• Capt. Suzanne Englebert, chief of prevention, District 7.

• Cmdr. David Allen, director of auxiliary.

• Cmdr. Aylwyn Young, deputy commander-sector St. Petersburg.

• Cmdr. Bill Moore, deputy executive officer of Air Station- Clearwater.

• Lt. Mark Lucas, law enforcement.

Chief Warrant Officer Randal Ryan, commanding officer, Station Sand Key.
