TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - Saturday afternoon Pinellas County sheriff's deputies were called to investigate the discovery of what appeared to be a homemade explosive device in an area north of the Anclote River.

Sgt. Jim Bordner, Sheriff's Office spokesman, said the device was found by employees at Anclote Metal, a recycling business at 806 Anclote Road. The business is in an unincorporated area north of the city of Tarpon Springs.

While sorting through scrap metal that had been transported to the business for disposal, an Anclote Metal worker discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb, Bordner said.

As a precaution the business was closed and the 10 to 15 employees on hand were evacuated until the device can be rendered safe or removed from the property, he said.

Members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Bomb Disposal Team are responding to the scene to assist under a mutual aid agreement.
