NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - More than 600 people participated in the first Hike for Hospice, a benefit that raised $100,000 for Gulfside Regional Hospice, organizers said.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott greeted the hikers at the New Port Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center, signed autographs and took photos prior to the commencement of the hike.
Nancy Underhill, the widow of a former Gulfside Regional Hospice patient, read a powerful testimonial about her family's Gulfside Regional Hospice experience.
Children from Gulfside's Bereavement Center presented Alstott with a plaque for his participation and for his previous visit to the bereavement center.
A Memory Wall featured photos and testimonials from participants.
Linda L. Ward, president and chief executive officer of the hospice, and Alstott and family launched the 3.1-mile journey.
The teams that raised the most money for the hike were greeted by the mayor of New Port Richey, Dan Tipton, after the walk.
The winners were Walker's Walkers, Hook's Navigators, Friday Shufflers and Vince's VIPs.
