NEW PORT RICHEY - NEW PORT RICHEY - On a night where she was recognized for eclipsing the 1,000 career point mark, senior Gulf guard Jordan Schulman did what she has done throughout much of her high school basketball career: she led the way.

After being presented with a decorated ball before the game Monday night, Schulman guided the Buccaneers (9-3) to a 42-19 non-district victory over Mitchell with a game-high 18 points.

She is now only the fourth Gulf player to ever reach 1,000 points.

Helping Schulman along the way was standout freshman point guard Nicole Adams. The first-year starter complemented her teammate's effort by dropping in 15 points of her own – 8 of which coming from the free throw line.

Adams got herself to the line five times and buried 8 of 10 attempts.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but the Buccaneers were able to ride out a 25-10 halftime advantage the rest of the way.

Mitchell head coach Stephanie Koslin said after the game that it was just one of those nights for her girls offensively.

"We had good looks, but they just weren't falling," she said. "Sometimes you have nights like that."

Mitchell (7-4) set a physical tone to the game early and was more aggressive on the boards, but the close-range second chance shots would not consistently fall.

The Mustang's Lashe Kirkland led her team with 8 rebounds on the night and was tenacious on defense. But unfortunately for Mitchell, that energy did not translate into points.

Foul trouble also did not help the Mustangs, with two players – Latoya Hillmon and Andrea Kosmalski – having to leave the game prematurely.

Gulf forward Lindsey Brooks contributed a large role in allowing Schulman and Adams to score 33 of the Buccaneer's 42 points as well.

While running their typical inside-out style of offense to find open shooters on the perimeter, Gulf head coach Mike Quarto looked to be encouraging Brooks to back in the post for shots herself.

She only tallied 4 points, but Brooks' efforts inside offered her guards better looks to the basket and also let her grab 8 rebounds.

After a rough showing against Ridgewood last Thursday, Coach Quarto said his girls have rebounded nicely and look to be headed in the right direction for the second half of the season.

Gulf finishes the week out with District 4A-8 road tests against Springstead and Zephyrhills on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The Mustangs will look to get back on track again Tuesday night at River Ridge. Friday will be their last of four consecutive out-of-district games when they play host to Wesley Chapel.
