The beloved holiday favorite "The Nutcracker" will come to the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center next weekend.
The Christmas fairy-tale dance production will be performed by the All American Classical Ballet School. The production features 88 of the Tampa school's students.
"Many of 'The Nutcracker' productions in the area bring in professionals to dance the principal roles. This production will use advanced students of the school to dance all the female principal roles," the school's director, Terri Howell, wrote in an e-mail message.
Professional ballet dancer Julio Montalvo will dance the roles of the Snow Prince and Cavalier. Montalvo, a native of Cuba, has danced in Paraguay, Portugal, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Mexico.
In the United States, he has performed with the Tulsa Ballet. He is also a guest teacher with the University of South Florida's ballet program.
A professional dancer Giselle Durand has been working with the student dancers to prepare them for their roles.
The traditional holiday ballet tells the story of Clara, who is given a wooden nutcracker for Christmas. Later, the Nutcracker comes to life. Clara helps him in a battle with the Mouse King and his legions. Victorious over the Mouse King, the Nutcracker is transformed into a prince. He takes Clara on a journey to the Land of Sweets, where they meet such beloved characters as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Dew Drop Fairy.
The ballet lasts for an hour and 40 minutes.
"The Nutcracker" will be at the Tarpon Springs Center for Performing Arts, 324 Pine St., on Friday, Dec. 21, and Saturday, Dec. 22, 8 p.m. both days, and Sunday, Dec. 23, 2 p.m.
Tickets are $18 general admission and $16 for Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center members.
Tickets are going fast, so reserve them as soon as possible, center staff members suggest.
