NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Each year Pasco County public school students receive valuable assistance thanks to the dedication of school volunteers.
And every year, each Pasco County school nominates an outstanding volunteer from three categories, Youth, Adult and Senior, for an award from the Pasco School District recognizing the volunteers' dedication to education.
A School District committee then reviews the nominees and selects a winner from each category.
The Pasco School Board will recognize the 2007-2008 school year Outstanding Volunteer Award winners on Feb. 5 during its regularly scheduled meeting.
"Volunteers are a vital resource in our schools," says School Superintendent Heather Fiorentino. "With their help, we are able to better secure a solid foundation for the success of all students."
Maribel Hernandez volunteers at Richey Elementary School, in New Port Richey. Hernandez, the outstanding adult volunteer winner, has stepped out this year and increased her involvement in many ways.
Not only does Hernandez assist in classrooms with the school's English Language Learners program, she is a liaison between Spanish-speaking families and the school.
The senior winner, Violet Fenton, volunteers at Seven Springs Elementary School. Fenton spent the majority of her summer months helping the reading specialist moving and organizing the reading book room at the southwestern Pasco primary school.
Fenton single-handedly shelved all the books and placed numbers related to the Lexile Framework for Reading program on each volume. Lexile is a system for measuring and boosting the reading comprehension of students.
Lauren Reid of Wiregrass High School was selected as the youth volunteer.
